If getting to Point Roberts isn’t practical, you can complete your USPS Form 1583 verification entirely online. It’s done from the portal, requires no printing or notary, and costs $20, charged to your account balance only once you’re successfully verified. (Prefer to save the $20? In person is free.)
What You’ll Need
- Two different forms of ID, at least one with a photo — passport, driver’s licence, state ID, or NEXUS; the second piece can be another photo ID or an address document (lease, mortgage, vehicle registration, insurance).
- A phone or computer with a camera, for the short video step.
The Steps
- Sign in and open Account → Verification, then choose Verify by video.
- Upload photos of your two IDs. The portal reads them and pre-fills your details.
- Confirm your details — check that everything extracted from your ID is correct.
- E-sign Form 1583 right in the browser.
- Join the short video call. A team member witnesses your signature live — this is the part USPS requires for remote verification.
Once complete, your account is fully verified: pickup PINs, 24/7 self-serve lockers, payments, letter mail, and forwarding all unlock. Like in-person verification, it’s a one-time step.
Tips for a Smooth Pass
- Photograph IDs flat, in good light, with all four corners visible — glare and crops are the usual retry causes.
- Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your ID.
- If you get stuck partway, you can come back and resume — or just finish at the counter instead, free.
